I learned to play chess from my dad when I was little. In Middle School a few of us were bored by classes and needed something to do in school that wouldn’t get us in trouble. So we took up teaching each other chess. Our senior year, we finished first in the Central Ohio league, 2nd in the Ohio state championship, and 17th in the US. I’ve won the Ohio Amateur Championship, and had a peak US rating in the high 1900s. I also taught chess for a while in Fredericksburg area schools. I still play blitz and the occasional rapid tournament, but nothing very serious. The image is from Chess Life - the publication of the US Chess Association. GM Pal Benko selected a few positions from the 1996 US Open to review and the first is my game against National Master H Wachtel. I was rather pleased with my play here, and of course with the attention from a GM.
The book here is something the three of us put together mostly as a teaching resource for HS kids we were working with.
